Hougang Sports Hall, Wednesday, April 27, 2017 — Victoria Junior College (VJC) maintained their unbeaten run in the National A Division Floorball Championship with a 12-0 thrashing of Temasek Junior College (TJC) to top their group with 15 points.
VJC were the favourites coming into the clash after four consecutive wins but the first period showed little evidence of that.
A scrappy first three minutes saw VJC’s Ng Jing Xiang (VJC #8) fire home the game’s opening goal but a combination of poor control and excellent goalkeeping by Axel Liew (TJC #88) kept TJC within touching distance of their opponents.
Despite his side’s slow start to the game, VJC’s captain Koh Dun Xian (VJC #5) said he was pleased by their showing.
“Overall, we did well,” he said. “As time went on, we learnt how they played and we corrected ourselves. That’s why we were stronger in period two and three.”
It was in the second period that VJC really came into their own, stringing passes together, carving open their opponents’ defence at will and dictating the tempo of the game. It was little surprise that they got their second just two minutes in, with Nicolai Alexander Neo (VJC #3) finishing neatly into the bottom corner.
The onslaught continued five minutes later as Ryan Loo’s (VJC #10) shot looped over the stranded TJC goalkeeper and into the net. Just a minute later, VJC had their fourth, with Ng Jun Wei (VJC #6) seizing upon a loose ball to flick home. Edly Irsyad (VJC #45) then added a fifth for the rampant VJC.
Even after a two-minute penalty was awarded against Edly, VJC’s box play – which consisted of four players as compared to their opponents’ five, netted to make it 6-0.
As VJC pressed for more goals, skipper Koh Dun Xian was the man calling and making the shots, scoring four goals in the space of nine minutes. Dun Xian’s nifty stick work and excellent composure meant his side had a 10-0 lead going into the last five minutes of the game. Goals from Jing Xiang and Koh Wenjun (VJC #14) then wrapped up the game for the boys in yellow against their tiring opponents.
The win sees VJC top Group C with 15 points while TJC ends their season placing fifth in their group with 4 points.
Despite his four-goal haul, Dun Xian played down the plaudits and chose to focus on his team’s performance.
“Without the team I am nothing,” Dun Xian noted. “I was a bit lucky to get a few goals in but it is always credit to the team.”
Dun Xian’s TJC counterpart Ong Pin Quan (TJC #6) lauded his side’s fighting spirit despite the heavy loss.
“We lost by a big margin but I think that as a team, we really enjoyed this game,” noted the TJC skipper.
While TJC ultimately fell short in the second and third periods, Pin Quan said his side could take credit from their showing.
He added: “We really supported each other in the match. I am really proud of this team.”
