Hougang Sports Hall, Wednesday, April 27, 2017 — Catholic Junior College (CJC) sealed their place in the next round of the National A Division Floorball Championship with six players on the scoresheet following their 10-3 win over Pioneer Junior College (PJC).
The CJC team was helped by a quick-fire hat-trick from Tristan Yeo (CJC #12) in the space of four minutes in the first period, providing the impetus for what ultimately proved an easy win. CJC finished second in the group with 10 points behind Victoria Junior College who have 15.
CJC started off the game on the front foot with skipper Roy Cheng (CJC #44) coming close, dragging a backhand narrowly wide from a quickly taken free-hit. The pressure soon paid off with Alven Koh (CJC #10) lifting a drag shot into the top corner to send his team 1-0 up with barely two minutes played.
Building on the momentum, CJC’s Kiran Dev Suresh (CJC #9) doubled his team’s advantage soon after, firing low after a quick interception. Despite the pressure, PJC found a window back into the game following a counter-attack, with L Harisankaran (PJC #6) finishing well.
Before PJC could find their rhythm, however, CJC’s Tristan took the game by the scruff of the neck, scoring three consecutive goals. The pick of the three goals was his second, taking on two defenders before shooting from distance and beating PJC’s goalkeeper.
CJC’s momentum continued into the second period despite Roy being forced off injured after being caught on the follow through by an opponent’s flailing stick. CJC’s Keeven Cheong (CJC #19) then scored his team’s sixth.
Despite a two-minute penalty in the 20th minute awarded against their opponents, CJC failed to capitalise on the power play – where they had five players on the pitch as compared to PJC’s four.
It was CJC’s turn next to run afoul of the referee six minutes later, with two players sent to the bench for two separate offences. But Harisankaran failed to capitalise, shooting straight at the keeper from a resultant penalty.
Fresh from his spell on the sidelines and on with a bandage, Roy made it 7-1 following an assist from Tristan. This goal was followed by a backhand slapshot from Alven with barely a second left in the second period to give CJC a seven-goal lead.
The final period was a tighter contest, with CJC opting to give a run out to players who did not feature in the earlier stages of the game. While PJC desperately tried to get a foothold back into what had become a scrappy game, CJC’s Keith Tan (CJC #27) made it 9-1 against the run of play.
A double from Harisankaran reduced the deficit, with his third goal of the game coming on the back of a power play. But two more goals from CJC sealed the three points as they ran out comfortable winners.
Despite the loss, PJC captain Yu Ming Jin (PJC #1) said there were still positives to take away from the game.
“We fought back hard in the second and third period and scored goals,” said Yu. “That showed that the team did not want to give up without a fight.”
With the loss, PJC finished third in the table with seven points.
