OCBC Arena, Monday, May 8, 2017 — Dunman High School (DHS) outlasted Anderson Junior College (AJC) 32-26 in the second round of the National A Division Basketball Championship.
With this win, DHS have a 4-0 win-loss record currently since their first round games. They will be up against Victoria Junior College next.
On the other hand, this game gives AJC a 2-2 win-loss record. They will play against defending champions Raffles Institution next.
Both teams got off to a slow start. Despite open looks, neither side were able to knock down their shots. However, a three from AJC allowed them to lead 5-3 after the first quarter.
In the second quarter, DHS got off to a good start with Teh Wen Jan (DHS #4) knocking down a three to start. However, AJC were quick to respond with a shot of their own. Both sides traded baskets but it was DHS who came out on top to lead 13-10 at the half.
Both sides continued to trade baskets with neither team letting up. However, DHS were able to make use of their size advantage to get the edge over AJC. Despite that, DHS committed unnecessary fouls on several occasions which gave AJC chances on the offensive end and at the free throw line.
AJC player #5 tried to will her team back into the game scoring all eight off AJC’s fourth quarter points and leading the team with 10 points but her efforts fell short as time expired.
DHS eventually emerged victorious with a score of 32-26.
DHS captain, Selina Ang (DHS #8), commented, “We weren’t disciplined enough today. There were a lot of hands, like we used our hands instead of moving our legs on the defensive end which led to a lot of unnecessary fouls. We didn’t adjust to the game.”
Co-captain, Teh Wen Ruey (DHS #5), added, “Towards the end, we were stronger with our moves and were able to secure our rebounds. AJC played well and were very aggressive. They gave their all and did not give up till the final buzzer. That was a commendable fighting spirit.”
