The government has announced a new Olympic Pathway Programme to provide focused support for Singapore's top athletes at the 2012 London Olympic Games.
Athletes who are medal potentials, or who show potential for significant achievement at the London Games, will have their training and development plans charted. They will also receive sports medicine and science support.
The first batch of athletes to be considered for the programme are:
- Table tennis – Feng Tian Wei, Wang Yue Gu, Sun Bei Bei, Yu Meng Yu
- Swimming – Tao Li
- Shooting – Jasmine Ser
More athletes may be added to the programme subsequently.
Calling the programme an "additional support mechanism", Mr Teo Ser Luck, Senior Parliamentary Secretary for the sports ministry, added that he hoped it would "provide more motivation for our athletes to fulfil their Olympic ambitions and realise our vision of developing a sports institute to groom more elite athletes."
The Singapore Sports Council will continue with its existing high performance programmes for national athletes participating in other games like the Asian, Commonwealth and Southeast Asian Games.
The Olympic Pathway Programme will be overseen by a Steering Committee and assisted by three sub-committees
