Delta Sports Complex, Tuesday 25 March 2008 – St Andrew’s beat Raffles Institution 4-3 in the final of the B Division hockey championship, cheered on by a large group of Saints supporters and a somewhat smaller group on the Raffles side.
The Saints scored the first goal of the match to lead the Rafflesians 1-0. Raffles then equalised the score 1-1 soon after. But they were unable to take the lead and the Saints increased the goal difference to 2-1 and eventually 3-1 where it remained until the end of the first half.
During the second half, the Saints again scored the first goal and made the scoreline a comfortable 4-1 lead. With 20 minutes left in the game, the Saints continued their attack but neglected the defense. This gave Raffles the chance to catch up to 4-2, then 4-3, sending anxiety down the spines of the Saints players and supporters alike.
But the Rafflesians ran out of time and after the final whistle, St Andrew’s was crowned champion of the National B Division 11-aside boys’ hockey. St Andrew’s last won this title in 2005.
