Yio Chu Kang Stadium, Monday, August 17, 2009 – Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) thrashed Raffles Institution 38-0 in a boys’ C Division rugby semi-final match.
Both teams were vying for a spot in the final, and they were both sure they would pocket the spot that very evening.
Three minutes into the game, ACS(I) scored the first try of the match, and Ngen Ge Liang (#9), followed up with a successful conversion to give his team an early 7-0 lead.
Despite Raffles’ attempts of trying to stop ACS(I) from scoring once again, an ACS(I) player pushed his way through the Raffles defence and scored another try 12 minutes later. Once again, Ge Liang scored the conversion.
For a period of time, Raffles and ACS(I), led by their respective hookers, Nick Wang (#2) and Barry Ann (#6), were both continuously awarded line-outs, though after a few minutes, scrums followed by another line-out from the opposing team would take place.
Though the Raffles supporters were cheering their team all the way, their efforts were fruitless as all the Raffles players could do in the remainder of the first half was to defend their goal line and prevent ACS(I) from extending their lead, which was 14-0 after the first half.
Recharged from the break in play, ACS(I) scored another try within 4 minutes of the restart. Ge Liang nevertheless displayed wonderful footwork once again and scored the conversion.
Two minutes later, ACS(I) showed Raffles who’s boss with another try and conversion, giving ACS(I) a 28-0 lead.
With their supporters cheering them on, and the determination to win the match, Raffles’ Wern Ho (#8) and Nicholas Phua (#12), backed by the leadership of Subastian Tan (#9), attempted to score tries the moment they had the opportunity to, but ACS(I) sent them back without a point.
10 minutes later, ACS(I) scored yet another try, and Raffles looked worn out.
With 4 minutes to play, ACS (I)’s  Shi Cheng Hao (#11) paired up with Aldrin Harvey (#8) to score the final try of the game, sealing ACS(I)’s place in the final.
Though Raffles displayed wonderful game play, they were no match for their ACS(I) opponents, and lost 38-0.
ACS (Independent) will be playing ACS (Barker) in the final this Friday, August 21, at CCAB (Evans Road) at 4.45pm.
