CCAB, Friday, May 2, 2008 – In a nail-biting game, Anglo-Chinese Junior College sent traditional rivals Raffles Junior College out of the first round of the A Division Girls Hockey Championship with a 0-0 draw. RJC needed a victory to secure their ticket to the next round while ACJC only needed a draw. As they entered into this match, it would have been on the back of the mind of this RJC team that this could be very well be the last time that they would be playing as a team.
From the get go, RJC gave their all and poured forward to attack the ACJC goal. However, poor passing and ball control did not allow them to sustain any effective siege on ACJC. Often these errors would lead to ACJC counter attacking against RJC. However, ACJC did not convert any of the chances or penalty corners they received. On the other hand, RJC received more penalty corners than ACJC in the first half, but they too failed to convert any of these chances as well.
In the second half, RJC kept up the pressure and the ACJC keeper nearly cracked under the stress. The best chance of the game fell to RJC’s forward, #9. She had effectively dribbled past the ACJC defense and actually rounded the keeper but was tripped at the very last minute before she could take a shot. With that, RJC were awarded a penalty corner. From this penalty corner, they could have scored with the ACJC keeper running out of position yet again. However, an ACJC defender was on the on line to clear the ball to atone for her keeper’s error.
The ACJC defense remained stout and it seemed like a brick fortress surrounded their goal. Despite their goalkeeper’s many erroneous judgments, they were let off the hook many a time. When the final whistle blew, it was a moment of mixed emotions. RJC were left to rue the missed chances and the end of their journey as a team. On the other hand, ACJC celebrated as they knocked out a traditional rival and continued their progress into the second round.

mr or ms random…grow up and dun disgrace parents for not teaching u manners…
everybody has done it before. shut up and stop pretending to be a goody two shoes.
I am a matured watcher from neither JC. I don’t understand why there should be jeering in the first place, it’s not as if AC won RJ. Mind you, RJ has definitely NOT lost to AC.They DREW in that match! In fact, if not for the other games played earlier with other teams resulting in AC concentrating only on defending their game with RJ, I am sure RJ has a good chance of winning AC.
indeed, the best is – yet to be.
i was one of those hockey boys in the stands and i will say that there was no jeering where i was standing. what i saw and felt was one school and one team cheering our hearts out for our counterparts. and even if there was jeering, it matters not what form you support your team in but the level of support you give your team. jeering is merely a form of cheering. don’t take it personally or hold grudges because things are done at the spur of the moment and people get lost in the moment. you CANNOT tell me people in other schools do not jeer. or have not jeered before. these things can’t be helped so let this issue be. no point for the pot to call the kettle black. and we are indeed all black in this sense. anyway, i applaud ac for cheering our hearts out and the ac hockey team deserves a pat on the back for putting our hearts out on the pitch. The Best Is Yet To Be
i was also watching the match and am very sure that when i stand among the supporters, i hear such jeerings. but those supporters are ac supporters. therefore i move off n join in the supporters for another school to watch the match. i feel better over there since what they do are showing encouragement and support to their school players but not jeering n booing at the other school players. that’s just very wrong.
hmm so the jeerings started from the senior batch. no wonder. well fyi, those jeering were the AC HOCKEY BOYS.
i don’t see why the jeerings have anything to do the AC hockey player’s. the jeerings come from supporters and not the players themselves. so why are people commenting that all ac players are that way?
as for the elbow shot, it’s just what the author wrote to spice up the article. in fact there was an rj player who was pushing our player not once but many times. there were few other incidents as well. we still continued to play and we didn’t complain. we could always bring it up to the umpires and cause a hoo haa.
clearly i don’t see why you have to be so harsh as to say ‘await your downfall’. maybe you can tell us that your schoolmates has never done such jeerings before. i highly doubt that. and with you saying such things, it just shows that you’re similar to those that were jerering. and maybe when u stand among the other supporters, you can hear such jeerings as well. it is always common in games. no doubt they are wrong actions but we can’t stop them from coming.
cmon ref!
it’s not as if ac doesn’t say such stuff on the pitch, or other schools for that matter.
but the point is that, at least they’re playing and i suppose they have the right to play with the opponent’s minds if they wanna (even though it’s such underhand means).
Spectators jeering is just so uncalled for…
and i think volleyball match supporter can say whatever he/she wants. after all this comment box is for anyone to say what they feel like saying. so if the person wanna talk about jeering it’s his/her own freedom.
perhaps this has nothing to do with the game of hockey. rather than quarrel over here please move off to like elsewhereeeee. please? Besides jeering is bad yeah we all know that but all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of god. Amen.
its shaun
I don’ get why certain people have to comment on jeering. It’s part and parcel of sports and that is why players are trained to block out these comments and play their game. I believe there is no harm in jeering as it always occurs especially in heated matches like this. There is no need to comment on such a small matter like jeering. ‘Volleyball match supporter’ should think before he/she speaks out.
hello hello, i dont get why the ac girls should be blamed for this ‘stereotype’ comments made about the sportsmanship and treating competitors with respect. If this is about the ACS schools as a whole, then you’ve come to the wrong place, because the ac girls come from different schools and are not part of the stereotype that you guys have formed .
