Penang, Malaysia, October 19-23, 2009 – Lewis Chua, 18, won a bronze medal in the Junior Men’s 105+kg category at the 2009 Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships. 24 Commonwealth countries were represented by almost 200 athletes.
Singapore entered one of its biggest squads for an international weightlifting competition in recent years with five athletes. The lifters matched their personal bests and established new ones at the championships. Three athletes were under the age of 20.
Bronze medal winner Lewis Chua is currently serving his National Service with the Republic of Singapore Air Force.
Singapore’s Ang Hwee, who needed to lift a total of 290kg to stand a chance of selection for the Laos SEA Games, was withdrawn from the competition because of an injury.
Initially entered as a ‘guest’, Chuanfu – who arrived in Singapore as a head coach for the team – was recognised as an official entrant for Singapore. Following two incomplete lifts in the Clean & Jerk, he was unfortunate to have his final lift of 160kg declared a ‘no lift’ on a technicality. This eliminated him from winning at least a bronze.
