Hey athletes,
Did you know that you can nominate your coach for an award? The deadline for a nomination is 30 June 2007. You can check out more details at www.ssc.gov.sg/CRA2007.
After attending countless games, I now have a list of things that coaches will say (or rather, yell) at their charges in the heat of a game. Here is my list of the silliest things we heard:
1. "Can you see where the ball is going?!" (Should have had his eyes checked before you picked him, coach.)
2. "Do you want to play this game or not?!"
3. "What kind of pass is that?! You want me to slap you?!" (This one is verbal abuse.)
4. "Did I teach you to throw into the defenders hands?!" ("Now that you mention it, coach …")
5. "ni shi pen dan!" (Translation: "You are stupid!")
6. "Do you hate your opponent?! Do you hate your opponent?!!" (That’s one way to motivate your charges.)
The only reason why I have a list of quotes is because the coaches YELL AT THE TOP OF THEIR VOICES at the game. When you are sitting at one end of the court and you can hear the coach from the other end of the court, that qualifies as yelling.
So, if you have a good coach, please, please, nominate him or her. You’d be doing Singapore sports and your juniors a big favour.

p.s. I’m not putting up pictures of any coaches in case you think one of the quotes came from that person! If you have experiences to share, good and bad, regarding your coaches, leave it in the ‘comments’ section. And please, if it’s something, negative, NO NAMES, ok?
I get the same constipated look too when I hear some of these coaches yelling at their charges. (Photo © Lai Jun Wei/Red Sports)
good comments (:
but you should see Anderson girls team coach.
he scold hokkien vulgarities at the player although the school principal is beside him. when the other team commits a foul and was not called, he shouted, yelled at her, “Pass away the ball! Now waste possession $@$&@^&%^@^&%^@$^$”
i hav a coach who always shout this:
1.Ni shi zhu ah!! (u are a pig??)
2.run also lose ppl,go play netball la..
3.Hey!! wad kind of pass is tat? u wanna come back to de bench and drink kopi with me?
Hi Leslie,

300 2.8… -swoons- anyway i heard of this squash coach who always tells his new players this:
“You all better learn how to play your strokes properly, if not later u’ll see more than 1 ball in the court, and it’s not a pretty sight.”
and overheard another coach saying this:
“Move like a butterfly, sting like a bee, just try not to fall down lah.”
yup. but then no money lah 😀 i will stick to my 17-55 and 70-200 for now. haha. at least can zoom out a mere bit in case the action comes really close. better than to miss a shot if a 135 was mounted.
cheers bro! take care.
hi zhongwei,
No haven’t tied the Mark III yet.
Yeah, really nice lens, the 300 2.8.
I recommend the 135 f2. Very useful for most sports.
nice 300 2.8
been trying to get my hands on a fast prime and of course a much sought after 1D camera. have you tried the Mark 3 yet? the buffer is lethal 🙂
Hi Junwei, I like number 1. haha. ; ) “Sportglish”. cool term. I’ll remember that.

i overheard a few interesting quotes when i’m out on the field as well.. kind of funny some of them..
1) Har? ni zai pai zao ah? xiang ge mu tou yi yang..
(Translation: Har? You taking photo is it? Stand like wooden-block like that)
2) Run! (insert player’s name) Run!!
3) Who teach you one? Your Grandma is it?
(I don’t know why grandmas are always brought into the picture. Leave them alone. haha (: )
but i do admit it’s quite interesting to listen to coaches and their comments, especially when it might involve the referee, other team or when they add in other languages. Becomes a total new “sport-glish” language. haha..
Oh, and yes I also do agree with ‘Yo’ that the coach of Jurong Secondary girls team is another good coach! A really good one too.
Hello! Haha I’m one of the Ahs players who is being coached by 2 coaches ‘Yo’ mentioned! The husband’s Guo Ming, and the wife’s Qiu Fang!! 😀 I think they’re very good coaches too! Times when we need encouragement, he would never fail to be there. And yes, with reference to what ‘Yo’ said, although we may not necessarily win every game, but we really benefit from their coaching. It really helps us to stay, strong, be strong, and never give up till the very end. I still remembered on one occasion where we did long distance running and at the end when I almost wanted to give up, he took the initiative to run by my side despite having much pain at the waist. I was really touched. That’s why I told myself I must never, never do anything to disappoint such good coaches like them! [:
hahahahaha!
That’s great, JT.
If all of you start contributing quotes like these, I think we can publish a booklet for aspiring coaches entitled “100 phrases every coach should know”. : )

My hockey coach has a whole list of great quotes…
“Eh you all playing for which team ah??” – After a string of passes that went straight to our opponents.
“Why are you smiling? You very happy is it???”
When he is going to score, you push him over! You go for his legs! You kick him! You don’t stand there and stare!!!”
“I know the ball is very beautiful. But no need to stand there and stare at it as it goes past you!!!”
Hi yo. Thanks for your comments.
Yes, you are right, character is more important. I hope the coaches who get nominated are the best characters who provide an excellent role model for their teams.
I think we can continue the discussion on good basketball coaches in the forum section.

mr les, can i contribute another quote. i rem a few yrs back a famous south zone C gers team coach (an old man) told his players:”they r a fast team, if u cant get the ball just push the players”.there will at least twice a unsportsman like foul (U) or the NBA call Flagrant foul was committed but will not called.the referee’s explanation was simple, they r young, they dunno. ha ha
i know of a few who shows gd example and behaviour. Mr Ong from NYJC girls team. the coach of jurong sec girls team. the husband and wife coach of AHS girls team. these are all very good coaches. it is a pity that i dunno their names. they will congrats and encourage the opp teams’ players even when their own team lost. i hope more coaches can be liek them. although they dun always win but i think the players really benefit from their coaching. Character is more impt than winning a game or a championship.
Hi yo. I’m sure these things happen, that’s why we should nominate the good coaches because they deserve it.
i heard the coahc who won national champion this yr yelling at the opponent team, telling the players they r stupid and should give up.
i also knew of a coach cheating in the group balleting, the worse is that the students/players were involved and they were totally not ashamed about it.
