Laos, Sunday, December 13, 2009 – The golds kept coming for Team Singapore on the fifth day of the 25th South East Asian (SEA) Games as they garnered six more to boost their impressive medal tally.

The swimmers continued their strong showing in the pool with another two golds to bring their total to 12.

17-year-old Quah Ting Wen earned her fourth and fifth gold medals of the Games when she clinched the women’s 200m freestyle crown in 2 minutes 0.57 seconds, which was a new Games record. She then teamed up with Shana Lim, Roanne Ho and Tao Li in the 4x100m medley relay to break the Games and national marks, en route to a quick 4:10.38s time.

Cheryl Lim won a silver medal in the women’s 200m Breaststroke, where teammate and baby of the team, Samantha Yeo, the youngest member of the Team Singapore contingent at 12, broke the Under-14 record with her 2:36.04s. Russell Ong earned a bronze in the men’s 50m freestyle, coming home in a time of 22.98s which was a mere thousandth of a second behind his personal best.

Rabiatuk Ishak won a gold in the women’s Tunggal event in Pencak Silat, as did fellow martial arts exponents Khor Poh Chin, Tao Yi Jun and Tay Yu Juan in the women’s Wushu Duilian (with weapons). Their male compatriots, Fung Jin Jie, Samuel Seah and Jaryl Tay earned a silver in the barehand category.

The shooters won their fifth gold of the Games when Jasmine Ser emerged from a sudden-death shoot-off to win the women’s 50m Rifle 3 position event. Aqilah Sudhir won a bronze in the same event, and they both teamed up with Lim Chea Rong to clinch a silver in the team event.

Yang Zi and Wang Yuegu won the table tennis mixed doubles gold medal in an all-Singaporean final, but the paddlers’ hopes of a clean sweep of all seven golds up for grabs were dashed when both men’s doubles pairs crashed out in the semi-finals.

Boxer Khairul Hamid claimed a bronze in men’s Lightweight category when he lost his only bout of the Games in the semi-final stage. Dinah Chan also finished third in the women’s 30km Individual Time Trial.

In track and field, there was heartbreak for Triple Jumper Stefan Tseng as he came within a whisker of breaking his own national record as well as winning a medal. He fouled his first two jumps before leaping 16.03m in the third round to take the lead in the eight-member field.

Thailand’s Varunyoo Kongnil then produced a 16.29m jump in the fourth round to push Stefan down to silver medal position, which became a bronze in the fifth when defending champion Theerayut Philakong leapt a distance of 16.25m, and after Stefan failed to improve with his attempts during those two rounds.

That would-be bronze medal was then vanquished when Filipino Joebert Delicano, jumping just before Stefan in the final round, produced a 16.12m hop, step and jump to relegate the latter further down the pecking order to fourth.

Stefan still had a final jump, but he fouled on that attempt to finish just out of the medals, and within one centimetre of his national record of 16.04m.

On the track, after their poor form led to months of ‘will they, won’t they’ speculation on whether Poh Seng Song and Mohd Amirudin would get to take part in the men’s 100 metres, they eventually did, and qualified for the final.

Suryo Wibowo and Wachara Sondee surged ahead of the field to get a lock on the top two positions, but behind them, Amirudin’s late push nearly won him the bronze. He was just a hundredth of a second off Indonesia’s Fadlin who clocked 10.61s. Poh finished fifth in a time of 10.70s.

Team Singapore’s medal tally after the fifth day of competition currently stands at 24 golds, 12 silvers and 26 bronzes. The Games will end on December 18.
