Republic Polytechnic Sports Complex, Monday, January 11, 2010 - The Institute of Technical Education (ITE) managed to rally in the last period to snatch a 5-3 victory over Singapore Polytechnic (SP) in their opening match of the Men's Inter-Varsity-Polytechnic (IVP) Floorball Championship.
ITE opened their accounts three minutes into the game with a goal by Md Rashid (#16) after the SP goalie fumbled. ITE had the lion's share of possession in the beginning of the first period but SP did not shy away from probing their opponent's defence. A teasing shot by SP's Siraaj (#19) was saved by the goalie after possession was lost by ITE.
Good work by SP's Md Alif (#90) saw him fashion an opening for himself down the left which he responded in glee with a dragshot at 12:58 minutes, which nestled in the top corner that left the ITE goalie rooted to the spot to level the score at 1-1.
ITE upped the tempo soon after, with Md Syazni (#25) particularly threatening with his lightning forays through the centre. Md Alif had a long range effort saved at 17:00 minutes, followed by shots by ITE's #22 and Radziman (#29), that did not manage to beat the SP goalie.
With the score still tied at 1-1, the second period saw ITE stepping up their attack and SP frantically backpedalling. ITE's #25 had a shot saved at 12:15 after a throw out by his keeper.
However ITE were caught on the break after SP's Md Isa (#11), embarked on a run that was unchecked and his rebound was smacked in with a dragshot by his teammate Suria (#23) to give SP a 2-1 lead.
ITE's Radziman (#29), was then awarded a 2-minute penalty for slashing, which he vehemently protested.
SP’s Md Aliff (#90) again got on the scoresheet to bring the score to 3-1 after an assist by Md Isa (#11) at 16:00 minutes. ITE, however had other ideas as Radziman (#29) scored to make it 3-2 at the end of the second period.
During the interval before the third period, ITE's coach Jill Quek was overheard during their team talk asking her charges to increase their tempo and to put in more shots into SP's area.
They did just that as Md Syazni (#25) scored from the right after a clever assist by Anas (#28). The score was now level at 3-3 with 10 minutes to go, making it anybody's game.
However, SP were denied a famous victory when ITE’s Radziman (#29) scored from the right after inventive play by his teammates. ITE then added another through Md Afiq (#10) after linking well with #25 and #28, to bring the score to 5-3 with three minutes to go.
SP had no answer to ITE's late offensive but fair play to them for being able to penetrate ITE's defence in the early stages.
"The boys (SP) got exhausted towards the end, as you can see. But we will work on it," quipped Rello, SP's coach.
