Hua Yi Secondary, Monday, February 8, 2010 - Nanyang Girls' High swept aside Jurong Secondary 2-0 (25-13, 25-7) to qualify for the semi-finals of the C Division Girls' West Zone Volleyball Championship.
Nanyang started off shakily, struggling with their serve. Two consecutive serves out of bounds saw Jurong take the lead. Both teams kept the scores close, with Jurong maintaining a slender lead. However, mistakes saw the lead change hands when Kelly (Jurong, #10) served out of bounds for Nanyang to go one up at 10-9.
From then on, Nanyang did not look back as they surged forward, with their open spiker Jiamin (Nanyang, #1) scoring several points. Nanyang maintained a steady serve to keep the pressure on their opponents, and two timeouts by Jurong at the 14-9 mark and the 19-11 mark had no effect on Nanyang's scoring streak. Nanyang quickly took the set 25-13, after a ´double' by Jurong's setter.
In the second set, Nanyang stepped up on the pressure against Jurong. Jiamin (Nanyang, #1) continued to take point after point with the team surging to an early 6-2 lead. Many times, the Nanyang spikers found their attacks unblocked, and easily sent the ball into Jurong's court.
Jurong fought valiantly and strove hard to win every point, attempting to organise attacks at every opportunity. However, Nanyang proved too hard to overcome, and Jurong soon succumbed 7-25.
Nanyang will play their semi-final match on February 12 at Choa Chu Kang Sports Hall.
