Presbyterian High School, Tuesday, March 2, 2010 - Nanyang Girls’ High moved one step closer to qualifying for the quarter-finals of the National C Division Volleyball Championship after beating St. Hilda’s Secondary 2-0 (25-10, 25-15) in a Group C match.
Nanyang started off the game strongly, racing to a four-point lead within the first minutes. Good serves from Lee Aow See (Nanyang #3), and strong smashes from Goh Jia Min (Nanyang #1) gave them a consistent lead over St. Hilda's.
Halfway through the set, Nanyang committed a few mistakes, allowing St. Hilda's to make a brief catch up. However, Nanyang took advantage of a mild confusion in the St. Hilda's camp to increase pressure.
St. Hilda's were unfortunately plagued with unforced errors, and a spike by the St. Hilda's #9 out of bounds saw Nanyang take the first set 25-10 with ease.
St. Hilda's stepped up on their game in the second set and went on to score two points in succession. Nonetheless, it was soon equalized by Jenies Foo (Nanyang #2), and Nanyang continued extending their lead.
Five minutes into the game, St. Hilda's fought back and equalized 6-6. Undeterred, Nanyang replied with a series of good smashes and opened up the score gap.
Nanyang were soon at match point when the St. Hilda's setter saw her drop shot attempt find the net. Jia Min (Nanyang #1) fired off a good serve in the next rally. St. Hilda's managed to organize for an attack, but their #6 jumped and only managed to tap it into their own net, thus seeing Nanyang take the set 25-15.
Jia Min (Nanyang #1) was very pleased with the team's performance. She commented, "We made a few mistakes that we shouldn't have but we caught up. The team tried very hard and I feel very happy about the win."
Nanyang will play Chung Cheng High (Yishun) on Friday, March 5 at 4.15pm. Both teams have two wins each to their name.
In a separate Group B match, Jurong Secondary went down to Ngee Ann Secondary 2-0 (25-18, 25-20) after a close fight between the two teams.
Unforced errors by the Jurong team cost them the first set where they were beaten 25-18. Ngee Ann held their lead early in the second set, but Jurong stepped up their game and proved to be a challenge. It was a close fight between the two teams, but Ngee Ann proved to be the stronger of the two and eventually took the second set 25-20.
Jurong will play Yuying Secondary on Monday, March 8 and Ngee Ann will play Anderson Secondary on Tuesday, March 9. All B/C Division girls matches are held at Presbyterian High School.
