Presbyterian High School, Monday, March 1, 2010 - Dunman Secondary moved closer to qualifying for the quarter-finals of the National B Division Girls Volleyball Championship after they overcame Bukit Panjang Government High 2-0 (25-17, 25-14) in a Group D match.
Both teams started off trading points with each other. However, Jia En (Dunman #2) started the attacks and piled pressure on Bukit Panjang. It was not long before Dunman took a 12-7 lead, leading to a time out from Bukit Panjang.
However, mistakes from the Bukit Panjang side saw Dunman extend their lead to 19-11 lead. Bukit Panjang managed to steal a few points, but were unable to make a significant come back. The score was soon at 23-15 in favour of Dunman after Weiyu stuffed out a spike from centre spiker Jiayu (Bukit Panjang #3).
The Dunman #1 unfortunately served the ball out of bounds, and Dunman being unable to send the ball across saw Bukit Panjang take two points in quick succession. Dunman reached set point when Bukit Panjang was unable to return a ball, and took the set when Bukit Panjang spiked the ball out of bounds.
It was another close start in the second set. Bukit Panjang took an initial lead at 7-3, but Dunman quickly clawed back to level the game at 7-a-piece after Jia En (Dunman #2) forced a touch out from Bukit Panjang libero Yuanteng with her serve. A miscommunication between two players saw Bukit Panjang unable to return the ball in the next rally, allowing Dunman to steal the lead.
Dunman continued raking up points and piling on the pressure. Bukit Panjang seemed to be affected, and struggled with their game. A change of setter by the Bukit Panjang coached seemed to have a momentary effect as Bukit Panjang started making a comeback. However, it was short-lived as Dunman found their way to a ten point lead at 22-12.
Huijie (Dunman #7) spiked a ball just out of reach of the Bukit Panjang libero in the next rally to see the score stand at 23-12. The next rally saw several good attacks from both the Dunman and Bukit Panjang side. However, Huijie (Dunman #7) saw her spike find the net to allow Bukit Panjang to go one up.
Farah (Bukit Panjang #5) spiked into an empty spot from the opposite corner off the Dunman block to see the team take another point. However, Huijie (Dunman #7) made a similar move, and brough the team to match point. Dunman took the last point when Bukit Panjang's libero sent a free-ball into the net.
Being drawn in a tough group alongside Cedar Girls and Woodlands Ring Secondary, this victory means that Dunman has two wins to their name. They will play Cedar Girls on Monday, March 8 at 12.20pm to determine who tops Group D. All B/C Division Girls matches are held at Presbyterian High School.
