Presbyterian High School, Tuesday, March 23, 2010 - Cedar Girls' Secondary held off Presbyterian High to win 2-0 (25-16, 25-21) in a Group X quarter-final match in the National B Division Girls Volleyball Championship.
Joan (Cedar #18) gave Presbyterian High the first point of the set when she spiked out of bounds. However, she took back service when she spiked to the left line. Another spike from her saw the Presbyterian High libero deflect the ball out of bounds for Cedar to take the lead.
From then on, they held on to their lead all the way to the end. A timeout at the 9-3 mark by Presbyterian High, and another at the 16-7 mark were not enough to stop Cedar’s scoring streak. Presbyterian High managed to take a few points, but Cedar's lead was far too large, and Cedar was soon at set point after a spike down to an empty spot by Joan (Cedar #18). Xinying (Cedar #4) took the last point for the team with a spike to the back line.
Cedar were given the first point in the second set after Estella (Presbyterian High #18) spiked out. However, Estella (Presbyterian High #18) took the next point when her spike from the opposite was deflected out by Cedar. The Presbyterian High #1 then spiked out for Cedar to go one up. But Presbyterian High leveled back at 2-2 after the Presbyterian High #1's spike from the outside saw Cedar unable to receive.
The teams kept the score close, and Presbyterian High manage to pull ahead to 9-6. Cedar tried to narrow the gap and their efforts paid off when they finally tied at 15-15, causing Presbyterian High to call for a timeout. Cedar then turned the tables on Presbyterian High, and went ahead to 21-18, before Presbyterian High called for another timeout.
Cedar summoned their strength to finish off the game, and hit 23-20 after a spike from Joan (Cedar #18) off the Presbyterian High block. However, they were denied match point after they could not organize a return in the next rally.
Presbyterian High gifted Cedar match point when their #16, Hui Nie served out. Xinying (Cedar #4) took the last point for the team when she spiked off the block formed by the Presbyterian High #4 and #8, with the ball going down into the Presbyterian High court.
Cedar and Presbyterian High are drawn in Group X alongside Xinmin Secondary and St Hilda's Secondary. Xinmin will play Cedar Girls' on Thursday, March 25 at 2.40pm. St Hilda's will then face Presbyterian High at 3.30pm. Both matches will be played at CCAB.
