Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia, Saturday, April 10, 2010 – Amanda Choo, 22, broke her national 100m record when she clocked 12.03 seconds this afternoon in the heats at the Negeri Sembilan Open.

Amanda clocked 12.17sec in the semi-final and 12.38sec in the final where she finished second to the winner who clocked 12.29sec.

Amanda set the previous record of 12.12sec in Korat, Thailand, on December 7th, 2007, during the South East Asian (SEA) Games.

“My finishing is stronger now and that made a difference,” Amanda recounted to Red Sports while on her way back from Malaysia in her father’s car. “Also, the fact that I broke the record at the heats when it was delayed after a heavy downpour stood out for me today.”

Amanda was up against top Malaysian sprinters but how she finished was not on her mind.

“I was up against a few of the top Malaysian athletes. But for me, I was more concerned with the timings rather than position or competitors,” said Amanda whose next meet is the Pahang Open at the beginning of May. “The Singapore Athletic Association technical director was there as the team manager and they (SAA) have already verified it.”

A former student of CHIJ Secondary (Toa Payoh), Amanda is currently studying for an English Language and Physical Education and Sports Science degree at the Nanyang Technological University.

Congratulations, Amanda.

You did the nation proud.
