Clementi Sports Hall, Monday, April 26, 2010 – Yishun Secondary beat Anglican High 83-68 to finish third in the National B Division Boys’ Basketball Championship.

Their game came right after Singapore Chinese Girls’ School had unexpectedly beaten Jurong Secondary 70-46 to finish third as well in the girls’ category.

Yishun had lost to North Vista in one semi-final while Anglican High had gone down to Unity and both were looking to redeem themselves with a third-place finish.

Yishun won the tip off, and a quick pass ended up with Yishun drawing first blood with a Zhen Qiang (YSS#13) lay-up.

After a few minutes of the game, Yishun were playing well and leading 6-0 when Anglican High’s coach called a timeout. It was a surprise to see Anglican High’s starting point guard Chee Khan Liang (#7) on the bench for the rest of the game after only playing for five minutes.

Despite Khan Liang’s absence, Sherwin (AHS#8) and Bala (AHS#5) were doing their best to lead the Anglican High team as they looked for a win. However Toh Qing Huang (YSS #14) was hot from behind the arc and Yishun lead 20-12 by the end of first quarter. They pulled further ahead to lead by 42-26 at half-time.

The start of the third quarter saw bad news for Yishun as their centre Toh Hong Sheng (YSS #7) collected his fourth foul of the game but Yishun managed to continue their good play and by the end of the third quarter, they were leading 62-38.

At the start of the fourth quarter, there was a great block by Zhi Sen (AHS #14) on a Yishun player during a fast break. With over six minutes left, Anglican High’s coach called a timeout again and the team then came back with a full-court man-to-man pressure on Yishun.

Sherwin (AHS #8) was on fire in the fourth quarter, scoring a lot of points for his team as they fought to narrow the lead with each possession. He scored a 3-pointer during one possession but Qing Huang (YSS #14) replied with one of his own too.

Trailing 55-82, Sherwin (AHS #8) was then fouled on a 3-point shot and he made two out of three free-throws. During another fast break, Sherwin (AHS#8) got fouled and made the basket. He then went to the charity stripe and complete the 3-point play.

However it was not enough to win the game despite a lot of Yishun turnovers during the fourth quarter.

Qing Huang (#14) was the top-scorer for Yishun as he scored seven 3-pointers in the game while his team scored a total of 10 3-pointers.

Despite missing alot of shots at the start of the game, Bala (AHS#5) still managed to score a lot for his team with quite a few 3-point plays.

Tomorrow will be the final day of the boys’ B Division season as we will get to see two unbeaten teams – North Vista and Unity Secondary – play in the final.

Will Larry Liew (North Vista #11) be in top form and replicate his season-high 39 points against Dunman Secondary with nine 3-pointers again?

And will the West Zone MVP Ng Weixiang (Unity #14) lead his team to victory?

The game will be played at Jurong East Complex tomorrow, April 27th, at 3pm. Get down to watch the amazing final that everyone is awaiting!
