Bedok Sports Hall, Tuesday, May 18, 2010 – Raffles Institution continued their run of wins after their girls’ team clinched the championship title at the A Division Badminton Championship final. They managed a swift 3-0 victory over their opponents Victoria Junior College, winning the title for an eighth year running. In the battle for 3rd/4th placing, Jurong Junior College overcame Dunman High School 3-2 to go with the bronze their boys’ team won.
VJC put up a decent fight, but were no match for their opponents. RI’s Ng Su Tien won both sets in the first singles game despite having a hard time against VJC’s Lau Kah Yeen. Su Tien won 21-17, 21-16.
The first doubles game saw RI’s Charmaine Cheang and Valerie Lim take the first set with a score of 21-11. VJC twins Lee Cheng Ling and Lee Cheng Ting refused to give up and triumphed 21-17 in the second set. However, RI silenced VJC with a convincing 21-11 victory in the final set.
RI’s Emily Chua then steamrolled VJC’s Yang Jiu Hui with a 21-7, 21-9 win in the second singles, putting to rest any doubts that they would be champions.
RI teacher-in-charge Mr Wong Chu Lin had no doubt that his girls would win. He said: “We are favourites to win as we have the best players in the age group, but I would like to congratulate VJC for putting up a good fight.”
In the 3rd/4th placing match, Jurong JC triumphed after a 3-2 victory over Dunman High. JJC’s Zeng Jielin took the first singles match with a comfortable 2-0 (21-14, 21-6) win.
The first doubles match had to go into three sets to determine a victor, with Dunman’s duo of Ong Jia Yi and Cho Jia Yan edging out JJC’s Gao Xuru and Zhang Han 2-1 (21-16, 18-21, 21-19).
JJC’s Lu Ling Zhi then took the second singles match with an easy 2-0 (21-12, 21-4) win. JJC won their subsequent second doubles match with Tan Siew Hui Sharon and Du Yupei beating Dunman’s Rachel Lian Jia Bao and Chia Qian Hui 2-0 (21-15, 21-15).
This confirmed JJC’s win, and Dunman’s Tan Yih Sin’s 2-0 victory in the third singles served as mere consolation as they settled for fourth place.
