Bishan Stadium, Wednesday, August 19, 2010 — Ranjitha Raja completed the women’s 1000 metres heats in 3 minutes 7.66 seconds to place 18th out of 33 runners at the Youth Olympic Games athletics competition.
Her time was nearly five seconds off her personal best of 3:02.17 clocked at May’s Asian Area Qualification. She placed 11th in her heat, and her result puts her in the ‘B’ final next Monday.
Ranjitha started at the back of the pack, but tried to close in right from the start. There was a slight jostle with Libya’s Antisa Shushan as Ranjitha tried to overtake near the 200m mark. However, she found herself trailing behind as leaders Anastasiya Tkachuk (Ukraine), Andrina Schlaepfer (Switzerland), Georgian Peel (Great Britain) and Jenny Blundell (Australia) opened the gap on the final lap.
Tkachuk posted the fastest qualifying time of 2:43.55.
