Bintan, Sunday, October 17, 2010 — The wet weather halfway through the race did not stop Adi Puttera Bin Yusoff and Serene Lee in holding on to their day-one lead to finish first at the inaugural Tour de Bintan.
Following his first position finish in stage one yesterday, Adi of OCBC Bank Singapore Cycling team finished 7th in the second stage (74km) with a time of 1hrs 57mins 02secs, conserving his energy for the last stage. He concluded the day by sprinting to the finish line to win Stage 3 (38km} and emerge as the overall winner of the Tour De Bintan.
Talking about his win, Adi said: “I’m delighted, especially to win the overall Yellow Jersey and winning both stage 1 and 3. I’d like to thank my teammates for helping me to victory. The Tour de Bintan was well organised, and I will definitely be back next year!”
Serene Lee also put up a stellar performance today, taking home the King of the Mountain title for the second time. She pulled the peloton for almost the whole stage, taking the opportunity in stage 2 to test out team tactics before racing the last stretch in stage 3 to finish first overall with a time of 1hrs 8mins 3sec.
“I’m very pleased to win the overall title! After the heat yesterday, I welcomed the rain and cooler weather. There was less cramping and allowed me to generally enjoy my time at the Tour de Bintan,” said Serene.
Up to 500 participants signed up for the race, of whom 150 were Singaporeans.
The Tour de Bintan, with challenging routes over three gruelling stages, covers a total distance of 268km over two days. The tour format gives amateur cyclists a chance to select their race category based on cycling skills and experience rather than age group.
