Despite being tagged world number 147, Singapore's Gu Juan created the biggest upset on the second day of the 2008 Singapore Badminton Open, when she outplayed Hong Kong's world number 12 Yip Pui Yin in the first round of the annual Championship.

The second day of the 2008 Singapore Badminton Open was bittersweet for Singapore's Olympic-bound shuttlers Xing Aiying and Ronald Susilo. The former upset her higher-ranked opponent, while the latter fell tamely to Boonsak Ponsana of Thailand. The highly anticipated first round showdown between Singapore's number 1 shuttler Ronald Susilo and defending champion Boonsak Ponsana fell short of its pre-match hype. The world number 14 Thai took two straightforward games to silence the local favourite in 35 minutes.

Singapore had an army of 14 shuttlers playing on the qualifying day of the 2008 Singapore Badminton Open, but only 2 of the local hopefuls survived and qualified for the main draw of the US$200,000 event.

As a warm-up event for the Singapore Super Series next month (10-15 June), Singapore's Yao Lei won both her doubles matches at the Singapore Asian Satellite finals last weekend to give the home team its only two golds this year.
