They have done it again. Tan Yeow Chung and Teresa Marie Soh successfully defended their titles in the Men’s Open and Women’s Open categories respectively at the SAFRA Keppel Quadthlon.
The Singapore contingent will include swimmers currently competing in the 2010 Commonwealth Games, such as Richard Chng LiJie, Arren Quek Xin Hui and Aaron Yeo Xian Ying. It will also include local swimmers who will feature in the upcoming Asian Games in Guangzhou, China such as multiple Southeast Asian Games gold-medallist Tao Li and Youth Olympic Games silver-medallist Rainer Ng as well as rising stars Amanda Lim and Samantha Yeo.
Singapore’s only four-discipline endurance race, the SAFRA Quadthlon, continues to attract a good mix of participants each year, ranging from seasoned athletes, young sports enthusiasts, corporate employees to families. Despite a busy Sunday with at least three other sports events held on the same day, the SAFRA Quadthlon still attracted more than 400 participants.
The 16-year-old Singapore Sports School student broke the 57-second barrier for the first time in the 100 metres Butterfly when he clocked 56.82 seconds in the heats today, bettering his PB of 57.06 set at June's national championships.
Dzulhaili Mohd Kamal set a new personal best of 27.60 seconds in the men's 50 metres Backstroke heats to qualify for the semi-finals. Teo Zhen Ren and Jeremy Kevin Matthews also broke their previous best times in the men's 200m Freestyle heats.
The FINA/ARENA Swimming World Cup 2010 series, due to kick off in Rio de Janeiro from 10 to 12 September 2010, will feature four promising Singaporean swimmers in action against the world’s best.
Lionel bettered his under-17 50 and 100m Breaststroke marks with swims of 28.93 seconds and 1 minute 4.06 seconds respectively, while Samantha registered a 1:12.77 to break her own under-14 100m Breaststroke record.
