Singapore had a slow start to the Youth Olympic Games swimming competition, but they are riding a good wave on the penultimate day with three swimmers and the women’s 4x100 freestyle relay team qualifying for the evening semi-finals and final.
Liberian swimmers Sima Weah and Mika-Jah Teah competed for the first time ever in a swimming pool when they competed in heat one of the youth men's 50m freestyle event at Singapore Sports School on Tuesday.
Rainer Ng clocked a time of 26.45 seconds to finish second in the men’s 50m Backstroke final, securing the first silver medal for Singapore and bringing the republic’s medal tally to three at the Youth Olympic Games.
He clocked a time of 26.45 seconds, just 0.09 behind the eventual champion Christian Homer of Trinidad and Tobago.
Singapore's Adeline Winata and Pang Sheng Jun advanced from the heats of an individual event for the first time, on the fourth day of swimming action in the Youth Olympic Games.
Adeline's time of 31.43 seconds in the women's 50 metre Backstroke was 15th fastest in the field. It also improved on her season's best of 31.50. Sheng Jun advanced from his men's 50m Butterfly heat with his 25.63s performance, placing him 10th overall. It was a new personal best of him and made him the second fastest Singaporean for this event this year, just behind Dzuhaili Mohd Kamal's 25.57.
Rainer Ng won his 50m backstroke semi-final with a new national record of 26.37 seconds. It was the second fastest overall time, and this makes him the first Singaporean swimmer to make the final of an individual event.
