With the Rio de Janeiro Olympics happening in August 2016, the Singapura Finance 47th SNAG Swimming Championships is the last local qualifying competition for our senior swimmers to book their tickets to the quadrennial event.
The homegrown financial institution hopes to continue to support the swimming community by providing cash prizes for local record breakers at the meet, as well as raising the production value of the event.
Ting Wen has qualified to represent Singapore at June's SEA Games in six individual events - 50m, 100m and 200m butterfly; 50m, 100m and 200m freestyle. She has also guaranteed spots in the 4x100m freestyle, 4x200m freestyle and 4x100m medley relays.
Quah Zheng Wen finished off a successful meet with a national record of 25.52 seconds in the 50m backstroke super final while Clement Lim and Pang Sheng Jun came from behind to win in the 50m breaststroke and 400m freestyle super finals respectively.
Bryant Low set an unexpected 1500m freestyle meet record to accompany Quah Zheng Wen's own record-breaking efforts in the 50m butterfly and 200m IM. Zachary Ian Tan also set the 1500m freestyle meet record for 8-12 year olds.
Rachel Marjorie Tseng bagged another meet record for the 15-17 year olds when she clocked a time of 4 minutes 19.15 seconds in the women's 400m freestyle final. 14-year-old Christie Chue will be nominated alongside Rachel for this event at the SEA Games after she swam a massive personal best of 4:20.88.
The CHIJ Katong Convent swimmer set a new meet record for 15-17 year olds with her time of 2 minutes 3.80 seconds, shaving more than two seconds off Nur Marina Chan's two-year-old record of 2:05.67. It also smashed her personal best of 2:06.14, set three months ago at the Singapore National Swimming Championships.
The 18-year-old won the 100m butterfly and 400m individual medley finals, and qualified for the SEA Games by virtue of having one of the two fastest qualifying window times in each event.
