It was a day of rain and tears at Kallang yesterday, as the last 16 teams in the National ‘B’ and ‘C’ Divisions Netball Championship fought their final quarter-final battle at the netball centre.  As the rain and drizzles came and went, threatening at times to foil the continuation of play, the girls had to grapple with a wet-weather condition and puddle-laden courts.  Frustrating as it was, the girls kept up their spirits and put up a few good shows for the afternoon.

In the earlier ‘C’ Division games that started at 3.30pm, CHIJ showed their mettle in an athletic display of fearlessness when they upset the Singapore Sports School 20-14.  The game looked to wear both sides out physically as both teams played excellent defence with plenty of jumping and stretching to cut passes and cause turnovers.  CHIJ on the offense proved a more confident team yesterday, taking better shots and making more shots count.

In the other ‘C’ Division games, Raffles Girls’ School beat Tanjong Katong Girls’ School 32-10, Ang Mo Kio Secondary beat CHIJ-St Joseph’s Convent 21-16, and St. Margaret’s School levelled the game with Dunman Secondary at 27-27.

In the ‘B’ Division games, North Vista continued their ‘on-fire’ run as they edged out Cedar Girls 30-28 in a high-scoring game.  Delivering much excitement and pleasure to spectators and supporters, both teams looked equally strong, comprising fast and confident wings and centers, and boasting of tall and strong goal-shooters who took turns keeping the score-keepers busy.  The game proved to be a very tight one by the end of the first half, with the score at 16-15 in North Vista’s favor.  It could have been anyone’s game, but the North Vista girls pumped in just that extra bit of effort to take the game, and a place in the semi-finals, with two more goals.

In the other games, the Singapore Sports School beat Damai Secondary 44-18, Tanjong Katong Girls’ beat Raffles Girls’ School 21-12, and Nan Hua Secondary beat St Margaret’s 26-18.

North Vista, Raffles Girls’, Tanjong Katong Girls’ and Damai progress into the semi-finals which will take place this Thursday, April 12.
