Games do not usually come closer than this. The winning Nanyang Polytechnic (NYP) team, with two key players Alan Yeo (#74) and Tan Zhen Yan (#78) fouled out, had to dig deep into their reserves in overtime to beat Singapore Polytechnic (SP) 80-71 in a thrilling first round Group B match played on Monday 8 October at NTU-NIE.
Yet it all seemed over for NYP when SP’s point guard (#32) made a crucial steal with a minute left during the last quarter. He then passed ahead to a streaking teammate (#11), who converted the fast break for a slender 67-66 lead. The entire SP bench erupted with cheers as they had clawed back from an earlier 4-point 61-65 deficit. #11 then added two free throws to extend the lead to 69-66 with 27 seconds left and it looked all over.
However the NYP team refused to give up. Led by point guard Wong Wei Long (#71), they launched three consecutive three-point shots after coming off a time-out before finally connecting on their final attempt. Forward Ng Wee Kim (#70) was the man of the hour as he scored from beyond the arc to tie the game at 69-69 with just 4 seconds to go!
Spirits buoyed, NYP proved superior in extra time, making all the crucial plays to pull steadily ahead. Reserve shooting guard Neo Wen Bin of NYP shone during this period, connecting with a 3-pointer and scoring on a lay-up. SP on the other hand, perhaps still brooding about how they had let the game slip away earlier, went strangely cold in their shooting. They eventually scored just 2 points in overtime to leave with a 71-80 defeat.
Singapore Poly will next face SIM while NYP will next play Temasek Polytechnic. Both matches will take place on Wednesday, 10 October evening at NTU-NIE.
