Runs organised in support of causes are gaining currency. And the latest riff off that theme is the “Head Over Heels” Couples Run 2008. Organised in support of the Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports’ "We Are Married" celebrations, this run will be held on Sunday 6 April at East Coast Park.

"Marriage is a long-distance run", said Alan Sim, Director of Programmes at the Care Community Services Society which is organising this inaugural event. "As couples, we may face obstacles and even distractions along the way. However, the journey will be more enjoyable when you do not run alone but have someone run alongside with you – giving strength, support and encouragement."

Accordingly, the run is a substantial 8km long, participants must sign up as a couple, and timings will be assessed in combination. The fastest three couples will win prizes including jewellery and electronics, but all couples will leave with a goodie bag valued at $150.

Gracing the occasion as Guests-of-Honour will be former national athlete and Olympian A/Prof C. Kunalan and his wife Yoong Yin, who are one of the National Family Council's ambassador couples. "They just celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary," said Mr Sim, "What a model! A married couple whom we can emulate and learn from.”

Red Sports was curious about the unconventional event distance. "10km may seem too daunting for some. Yet we didn’t want a run that is too short," explained Mr Sim. As in marriage, "with tenacity and commitment, the couple can run and walk right to the end."
