Jaipur, India, Wednesday, 22 July, 2009 - Singapore's youth paddlers have finished with disappointing results on Day 1 of the 2009 Asian Junior Championships. The four teams consisting of the Cadet Boys/Girls and Junior Boys/Girls came up against stronger opponents and lost several of their matches.

The boys have lost two out of three matches played in the Junior Boys category whereas the girls have won one out of their two matches in the Junior Girls category.

The Cadet Boys category, the boys have lost both matches played while the girls have posted one win out of two matches played in the Cadet Girls category.

The Junior Boys team, consisting of Pang Xue Jie, Lim Jie Yan, Chong Hur Ying Darren and Benjamin Teo, is drawn into Group A together with Japan, Iran, Hong Kong, Kazakhstan and Pakistan. The boys lost to a much stronger Japan 0-3 (3-0, 3-1, 3-0) before overcoming Kazakhstan 3-1 (3-0, 2-3, 3-0, 3-0). However, they slipped to Iran 2-3 (0-3, 3-0, 3-2, 1-3, 1-3) in a disappointing finish to Day 1 of their campaign.

The Junior Girls team, consisting of Samantha Wong, Sylvia Look, Kwa Hui Qi and Chng Rui Min, is drawn into Group A alongside Japan, Chinese Taipei, North Korea and Sri Lanka. They beat the Sri Lankan team in straight sets, but simply had no answer to the Chinese Taipei team as they fell 0-3 (3-0, 3-0, 3-0).

The Cadet Boys team, consisting of Terry Tan, Chau Jia Liang, and Asian Youth Games bronze medalist Clarence Chew, suffered losses in both their matches as they fell to Chinese Taipei 0-3 (3-0, 3-0, 3-0) and Sri Lanka 2-3 (2-3, 3-1, 3-2, 1-3, 3-1). Drawn into Group B together with South Korea, Chinese Taipei, India, and Sri Lanka, they will have to ensure that they win their remaining matches decisively in order to progress into the next round.

The Cadet Girls team, consisting of AYG bronze medalists Isabelle Li and Chau Hai Qing, as well as Lam Teng Si, is drawn into what seems to be the toughest group. Their group, Group A, consists of China, South Korea, Hong Kong, and Kazakhstan. The girls fell to South Korea, who had world number one Yang Ha Eun, 0-3 (3-0, 3-0, 3-0). However, they beat Kazakhstan 3-0 (3-0, 3-0, 3-1) to keep their chances alive.

The Top three teams of each Group will progress into the next round, and with the performance, the Singapore team will have to fight even harder to keep their hopes alive. Good luck!
