Singapore Sports School, Sunday, 22 November 2009 - The second and final day of the FINA/Arena Swimming World Cup proved to be spectacular as three world records and one swimming world cup record were broken. And doing Singapore proud was Koh Ting Ting of Singapore, who walked away with one bronze medal in the women’s 400m individual medley.

Kathryn Meaklim (RSA), Peter Marshall (USA) and Therese Alshammar (SWE) set the pace for the rest of the field as they took turns to break world records in the women's 400m individual medley, men's 50m backstroke and the women's 50m butterfly respectively.

Francesca Halsall from Great Britain broke the World Cup record in the women's 100m freestyle.

Meaklim left her competitors in her wake as she stormed home with a time of 4:22:88, three seconds quicker than the previous record set almost a year ago by Mireia Belmonte (ESP). Koh Ting Ting gave the home crowd more to cheer about when she won the first and only medal of the meet for Singapore when she finished third in the same event in 4:54:81 behind Meaklim and Svetlana Karpeeva (RUS).

Peter Marshall of USA broke his own world record with a stunning swim of 22.61s in the men's 50m backstroke. Marshall's previous world record of 22.73s was set in the Stockholm leg almost two weeks ago. It is also his third world record of the series.

Said Marshall: "I'm very happy with my performance. I chipped away a little each time and I finally swam a better time. It is pretty unique breaking your own record. It's not something you do very often so it's pretty special for me."

Therese Alshammar ended the meet on a high when she broke her own world record in the women's 50m butterfly, with a time of 24.38s. Her previous record, also set in Stockholm, was 24.46s. Alshammar had earlier pulled out of the 100m individual medley to concentrate on the 50m butterfly.

"I swam the IM this morning and tried to go hard. I managed to get a PB this morning in 58.0 which is very fast so I was happy. But the events are too close together tonight. The 100m IM goes four minutes before the 50m fly so I decided to go with the 50m fly, which proved to be a good choice," said Alshammar.

The FINA/Arena Swimming World Cup 2009 ended its run today and the series' best male and female swimmers overall, Cameron van der Burgh (RSA) and Jessica Hardy (USA), were awarded USD100,000 each as they finished the series with the most number of points.
