Singapore Basketball Centre, Wednesday, July 8, 2010 — It needed extra time to separate the two warring sides, T-Net @ Bukit Merah and Qun Yan.

Eventually though, a three-point play by Qun Yan’s lanky centre (#10) with less than a minute to go in extra time was the difference between the two sides. She capped a spectacular performance by calmly sinking the free throw to edge her side ahead for a 55-54 victory.

Yet T-Net@Bukit Merah did have a chance at the end to win. A reverse lay-up by their stand-out centre (#12) rattled in and out of the basket in heartbreaking fashion before the buzzer sounded.

The two sided traded blows like boxers in a ring refusing to quit from the starting whistle. There was little separating both sides with a final spot at stake. T-Net @ Bukit Merah led the opening salvo with a 16-13 advantage in the first quarter.

T-Net did look comfortable as they maintained their early advantage with a 28-24 lead at the half.

Yet one counts out Qun Yan at your own peril. Exemplifying a great fighting spirit, they charged ahead in a pivotal third quarter with a 14-4 run. A fast tiring T-Net team had no response to their opponents’ repeated fast break forays and ended up trailing 32-38 at the end of the third quarter.

All hopes seemed lost for the gallant T-Net team until their centre (#12) popped up with two consecutive baskets at the start of the fourth quarter, including an unlikely 3-pointer to tie the game at 38-38. Qun Yan’s players were also guilty of squandering numerous chances in the paint to allow their opponents back into the game.

The stage for a furious end to the game was set.

T-Net’s centre (#12), who had been playing virtually the entire game, was instrumental in the final quarter for her team, scoring nine of her team’s 14 points in the quarter. T-Net’s point guard Violet (#7), who had a forgettable game by her standards thus far, scored a crucial 3-pointer though to tie the game at 46-46.

Dramatic scenes ensured in the final few seconds as the T-Net players were able to secure consecutive offensive rebounds. T-Net’s #10 eventually drew a foul in a desperate heave at the basket as the buzzer sounded. She had an opportunity to win the game for her team but squandered both free throws to send the game to overtime.

In the other game, Singapore Schools cruised to a 61-34 win over Jurong West Secondary to set up a thrilling final with Qun Yan. Both teams remain unbeaten en route to the final on Saturday at 7pm.
