Kuala Lumpur, Sunday, July 18, 2010 — Sean Lim won Team Singapore’s second track and field gold medal at the second ASEAN School Games when he led a one-two finish in the boys’ Pole Vault.

Sean and his Hwa Chong Institution school mate Benjamin Ng were the only ones who cleared 4.40 metres, and with their first attempts at that. Both had no missed vaults at that point of the competition, but Benjamin’s perfect record ended when he failed thrice at the next height of 4.50m.

Sean carried on his unblemished run when he cleared that height with his first attempt, then had the bar raised to 4.70m which would have been a new national record. However, Sean did not manage to scale that height, meaning his own national junior record of 4.61m as well as Mok Hay Foo’s 1993 national mark of 4.66m remained in the books.

Singapore managed two more bronze medals on the final day of competition at the Games. 18-year-old Justin Lee finished third in the boys’ Javelin, registering a best throw of 56.74m, while the quartet of Ng Chin Hui, Zachary Devaraj, Seow Yeong Yang and R. Avinash were third as well in the 4x400m relay.

Their collective time of 3 minutes 20.98 seconds was just half a second behind that of silver medallists Thailand, and over a second from the national junior record of 3:19.33 set by the ASEAN School Games team in 2006.

Team Singapore finished the meet with two golds, three silvers and five bronze medals in the track and field competition.
