East Coast Park, Sunday, October 10, 2010 — They have done it again. Tan Yeow Chung and Teresa Marie Soh successfully defended their titles in the Men’s Open and Women’s Open categories respectively at the SAFRA Keppel Quadthlon.

Mr Tan Yeow Chung, 35, said: “I am here today to defend my title for the Men’s Open. The floor was slippery for the skating section and that was actually my weakest leg. Luckily, my training strategy of focusing my training more on cycling and running paid off; I am happy that I won today.”

Reigning women’s champion, Ms Teresa Soh, 38, said: “I was happy that I came out of the waters first. This had never happened before, plus I managed to defend my title.”

Among the winners today were also the Tang sisters, who came in second in the Women’s Relay category. With the eldest aged 25 and the youngest 17, the Tang sisters competed in the race together for the first time and were supported by their family members.

415 participants ranging from seasoned athletes and budding sports enthusiasts to corporate employees and families were at East Coast Park this morning to compete in four disciplines over a total distance of 38.5km. The participants swam 500m, inline skated for 12km, cycled 20km and ran 6km in the six categories.

Organised by SAFRA Tampines, more athletes competed in teams with the relay categories being the hit this year. A total of 14 teams competed in the Corporate Relay category this year with more companies looking to foster teamwork and advocate a healthy lifestyle among their employees. The Corporate Relay team was won by Panasonics Electric Works Asia Pacifics Pte Ltd. Lam M F, Manager, 47 said: “It was their first time participating at the SAFRA Keppel Quadthon and we had fun doing their part during each leg. We hope to inspire others to join the event for bonding and team spirit.”

SLTC (NS) Abu Bakar Mohd Nor, PBM, Chairman of the Executive Committee of SAFRA Tampines commented: “This year, the race is aimed at attracting 4-persons relay teams as we received feedback from participants of the first two editions of SAFRA Keppel Quadthlon that most of them preferred to compete in teams where one person takes on only one discipline in the race. By doing so, we aim to promote team spirit and bonding. We are glad to have done well for the relay team categories with 81 teams participating, bringing our total participation to over 400.”

Title sponsor, Keppel continued to support the SAFRA Keppel Quadthlon. Mr Hoe Eng Hock, Executive Director of Keppel Singmarine and President of Keppelite Recreation Club complimented the SAFRA Quadthlon as a unique sporting event. He added that the endurance race is a great platform to train mental resilience, promote healthy lifestyle and foster ties amongst co-workers, all of which are important elements needed for greater work efficiency. As an advocator of a good work life balance and healthy living, Keppel is proud to sponsor SAFRA Quadthlon for the third time.

With increased team participation, SAFRA Tampines had also placed greater emphasis on additional logistical arrangements such as increasing the number of race officials, first-aiders, medics, lifeguards and doctors. This was to ensure that technical aspects of the event and emergency response procedures were well taken care of.

BG Lim Teck Yin, Vice President of SAFRA, graced the third edition of the SAFRA Keppel Quadthlon as the Guest-of-Honour, and flagged off the Men’s Open category at 7.40am.
