Presbyterian High School, Monday, February 28, 2011 — Shuqun and Anderson Secondary started the Nationals B Division Girls’ Volleyball Championship on a positive note as they won their respective first round matches. Shuqun beat fellow Group A opponent Dunman High 2-0 (25-25-21, 25-13) while Anderson edged out Queensway Secondary 2-0 (25-22, 25-17).

Shuqun were made to work hard in the first set as they took time to settle in. They were held by Dunman High as both teams sought to make a break. However, it was Shuqun who prevailed, running off to a 25-21 victory in the first set. The second set saw Shuqun up their momentum as they romped ahead to take a decisive 17-6 lead. Their front line dealt several blows to the Dunman defenses with their drop shots and kills.

Dunman High tried to stage a last minute comeback in the later part of the set, but were unsuccessful as Shuqun finished them off with style via a well executed drop shot by Clarissa Hon (Shuqun #2).

Final score
Shuqun 2 Dunman High 0
(25-21, 25-13)

In the other match, Anderson were quick to establish themselves in the game by taking an early lead. However, Queensway quickly bounced back to turn the tables on Anderson. The loss of centre spiker Jolly (Anderson #3) due to an injury meant that there was a huge hole in Anderson’s arsenal. Queensway kept the scores close, drawing level with Anderson several occasions. But it was the latter who managed to break free and leave Queensway in their wake.

Anderson pressured Queensway with their serves to deny their opponents any chance at staging a credible offense. This worked dramatically in Anderson’s favour as they quickly sealed the set 25-22.

Anderson took the first point in the second set via a quick ball from their #8. However, Queensway also responded with several spikes of their own as centre Ryshire Wu (Queensway #7) took several points for the team. As the match wore on, Anderson constantly tried to regain their footing and keep Queensway at bay. Queensway on the other hand, were feverishly playing the role of catchup, as they tried to prevent their opponents from pulling ahead with a huge lead.

As Ryshire (Queensway #7) rotated back to the front row, Queensway started raking in the points once again, but it was Anderson who kept moving towards match point. Soon, Anderson sealed the match 25-17 after firing off an ace.

Final score
Anderson 2 Queensway 0
(25-22, 25-17)
