Presbyterian High, Thursday, March 3, 2011 — Shuqun Secondary and Anderson Secondary have earned a spot in the second round of the National B Division Girls’ Volleyball Championship after winning their respective Group A matches. Shuqun saw off Queensway Secondary 2-0 (25-14, 25-21) while Anderson Secondary beat Dunman High 2-0 (25-17, 25-19). Both teams will meet on Tuesday March 8 to determine who will finish top of Group A.

Clarissa Hon (Shunqun #2) took the first point for the team after her spike deflected off the Queensway block. Kavis Koh (Shuqun #6) subsequently fired off an ace to take another point for the team. Shuqun were quick to establish a lead right from the start. Two timeouts by Queensway at the 12-6 mark and 17-8 mark provided no respite as Shuqun continued their rampage to blitz ahead, leaving Queensway in their wake. Soon, Shuqun took home the set 25-14.

Shuqun continued their dominance in the second set as they stormed off to an early 6-2 lead. An early timeout by Queensway was called at the 9-4 mark, and their tactics subsequently changed as they started feeding the balls to Ryshire Wu (Queensway #7) who sent her spikes towards Shuqun from the back row. Shuqun were not troubled and continued pulling ahead to lead lead 17-8, prompting another timeout from Queensway.

However, things were very different from then on as it was the start of Queensway’s comeback. Queensway raked in seven points while holding off Shuqun to narrow the gap to just three points, prompting the first timeout by Shuqun. Clarissa (Shuqun #2) stopped Queensway’s scoring streak as she responded with a spike after the timeout. However, Queensway subsequently took back control of serve, before earning another point through an ace from Ryshire (Queensway #7). Queensway continued fighting to close the gap, and came to within one point of Shuqun at 21-20.

Unfortunately, Queensway;s comeback was stopped short as Shuqun quickly regained their footing to pull ahead. They eventually took set point after a spike from Cally (Shuqun #1) from the opposite corner. Shunqun then sealed the match after a Queensway spike in the next rally found the net.
