Tomorrow’s telecast of Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong’s National Day Rally speech in English has been rescheduled to Monday night. This will free up Channel 5 to televise the final game between the Singapore national women’s table tennis team and China. Singapore is guaranteed at least a silver, their first Olympic medal in 48 years.
This is the first time that the telecast of the National Day Rally speech has ever been postponed. The speech has been telecast live since 1971 and looks like we have our own version of ping-pong diplomacy at play.
Some Red Sports readers had originally wondered what would happen with the clash in timings but looks like a gold medal match at the Olympics has won the day.
However, those who are scheduled to attend the rally will still be there for the recording. Said one grassroots leader who will be part of the rally audience, “This is a moment in history and I think most Singaporeans with two feet on the ground would be more interested in watching the match than listening to the speech.”
And for those audience members who find their thoughts straying to the game, we recommend they log in – discreetly – to redsports.sg via their mobile phones for live updates. 🙂
