Team Singapore athletes returned from the recently concluded 19th Commonwealth Games to a reward of S$1.88 million dollars. The Multi-Million Dollar Award Programme (MAP), administered by the Singapore National Olympic Council and sponsored by the Tote Board and Singapore Pools, provides cash rewards for athletes who win medals.
Table Tennis led the way with the paddlers winning S$920,000. The shooters hauled in S$780,000 while the shuttlers earned S$120,000. Singapore gymnasts have never won a medal since the country first took part in the Commonwealth Games in 1958 but in Delhi, our gymnasts won two medals to garner a total of $60,000.
Shooter Gai Bin was Singapore’s most medalled athlete, bringing home seven medals. He will earn himself a $270,000 reward for his efforts. Fellow shooter, Jasmine Ser, brought home four medals, and her wins will reap her a $210,000 windfall.
Under the programme, athletes who receive winnings are required to pay 20% of their winnings to their respective national sports associations.
